We present angular resolved photoemission investigations of the magnetic linear dichroism at the example of the Gd 4f core-level line. Surface and bulk components were clearly resolved and reveal a distinctly different behavior. The bulk dichroic signal varies strongly around normal emission, crosses zero right at normal and exhibits an antisymmetric behavior. However, the dichroism of the surface component has an angular dependence very similar to that of the free atom, which is rather smooth and insignificant in our geometry. The different behavior of bulk and surface components can be ascribed to diffraction of the scattered outgoing photoelectron waves at atoms along the propagation direction in case of the bulk component, and their absence in the surface case.

We demonstrate that such photoelectron diffraction effects have to be taken into account when magnetic dichroism in core-level photoemission is used for investigating surface and bulk magnetic properties of lanthanide metals.
