Growth, electronic structure and magnetism of Fe/W(100) — •Wulf Wulfhekel, Simona Bodea, and Jürgen Kirschner — MPI für Mikrostrukturphysik, Weinberg 2, 06120 Halle
We present a study of the growth morphology of Fe films deposited on the W(100) surface at different growth temperatures. Depending on the temperature, different structures evolve (pseudomorphic, partially and fully strain relieved) as seen with scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. This is explained by the interplay of diffusion and strain energies. The electronic structure of the films was analyzed using tunneling spectroscopy. The magnetic properties were studied with the magnetooptical Kerr effect and spin polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The integral and local magnetic properties are explained on basis of local anisotropies in the ferromagnetic films caused by strain relief.
