Development of micrometer-sized magnetic tunnel junction for the detection of single molecules by magnetic markers — •Monika Brzeska, Hubert Brückl, Jörg Schotter, and Günter Reiss — Universität Bielefeld, Fakultät für Physik, Universitätsstr. 25, D-33615 Bielefeld
Commercially available magnetic beads can be functionalized and used as markers for biomolecule detection in combination with magnetic tunnel junctions as sensors. These markers can be ferro- or paramagnetic and have sizes from a few nanometers up to micrometers. Estimations show that single biomolecules can be detected with markers of 50 nm diameter and magnetic tunnel junctions having an area in the micrometer range. We have developed junction sensors with active areas between 2x2 and 10x10 µ m2. The layer stack consists of an exchange biased hard magnetic layer (MnIr/CoFe), a Al oxide barrier and a NiFe sense layer. We demonstrate the magnetic switching behaviour of the sense layer in the presence of single magnetic markers and compare this experiments to numerical simulations.
