Electrical control of the exchange bias effect — •Andreas Hochstrat, Christian Binek, and Wolfgang Kleemann — Laboratorium für Angewandte Physik, Gerhard-Mercator-Universität Duisburg, D-47048 Duisburg

Chromium trioxide (α -Cr2O3) is an antiferromagnetic crystal of corundum type-structure. As expected from symmetry considerations, it shows magnetoelectrical behaviour. This means that an applied electrical field gives rise to a net magnetic moment. Using Superconducting Quantum Interfernence Device Magnetometry we investigate the induced axial magnetic moment, which is generated by an electric field applied perpendicular to the (111)-plane. Moreover, we grow a ferromagnetic Co-Pt multilayer by molecular beam epitaxy on top of the (111) surface of a single crystal of α -Cr2O3. The axial electric field induced magnetic interface moment couples to the ferromagnetic Co-Pt-layer giving rise to an exchange-bias-effect. According to the phenomenological approach of Meiklejohn and Bean this opens a possibility to control the value of the exchange bias by varying the voltage applied to the system. We investigate the electrically controlled exchange bias as a function of the electric field, the applied magnetic freezing field and the temperature.
