Bragg-MOKE: magnetic domains in Fourier-space — •Andreas Westphalen, Till Schmitte, Katharina Theis-Bröhl, and Hartmut Zabel — Institut für Experimentalphysik/Festkörperphysik, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany
The Bragg-MOKE technique extends the information of standard MOKE measurements by making use of diffraction from regular arrays of magnetic microstructures. Here we have explored the properties and the potentials of Bragg-MOKE for the investigation of magnetic stripe arrays. We find that the Kerr-rotation at the nth order diffraction spot is proportional to the nth Fourier component of the spatial magnetization distribution. In addition it is possible to filter out any contribution in the reflected light which does not exhibit the periodicity of the grating, like contributions from not-patterned portions of the sample. Furthermore an amplification of the magneto-optical signal is possible. The samples under investigation are stripes of CoFe-alloy and Fe with a grating parameter of 3 µm and different stripe widths, which display a variety of different magnetic reversal behavior.
