Weak spin orbit coupling in diluted magnetic semiconductors. — •Sören Henning, Stefan Schwieger, and Wolfgang Nolting — Lehrstuhl Festkörpertheorie, Institut für Physik, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Invalidenstr. 110, 10115 Berlin, Germany
Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) are characterized by the interplay of localized magnetic ions and valence band holes. The motion of the latter is determined by the typical zincblende (III - V) band stucture making effects like spin - orbit coupling important. We combine the use of the phenomenological Kohn - Luttinger Hamiltonian describing the valence band structure of the host semiconductor with the treatment of the magnetic system by a modified RKKY ansatz that has proved to be successful for other magnetic materials. A formalism is presented to study the influence of weak spin orbit coupling on the electronic and magnetic properties of DMS within an RKKY picture.
