Determination and applications of magneto-optical constants of lanthanides — •J.E. Prieto, F. Heigl, O. Krupin, G. Kaindl, and K. Starke — Institut für Experimentalphysik, Freie Universität Berlin, Arnimallee 14, 14195 Berlin
We have determined quantitatively the magneto-optical (MO) constants of Gd and Tb at the 3d-4f (M4,5) and 4d-4f (N4,5) excitation thresholds. Soft x-ray absorption spectra of in-plane magnetized films measured by means of total electron yield using circularly polarized synchrotron radiation were used to obtain the imaginary parts of the refractive index. They were quantified by matching the experimental spectra to tabulated absorption data far below and above the thresholds. The associated real parts were determined through the Kramers-Kronig relations. The MO constants of Gd and Tb obtained in this way were used for calculating several MO properties of thin lanthanide films. For example, a huge MO Faraday rotation of 0.7∘ per atomic layer is predicted at the Gd 4d-4f threshold. Furthermore, reflectivity spectra of magnetized lanthanide films were calculated and succesfully compared to our experimental spectra.
