The study of ultrafast magnetization processes on small length scales in
magnetic systems with reduced dimensions is of increasing importance for
fundamental and applied reasons. Magnetic transmission X-ray microscopy is
able to image by a stroboscopic pump-and probe technique
element-specifically magnetization dynamics on a 100 ps time scale with a
lateral resolution down to 20nm. We report on the first observation of
ultrafast magnetization dynamics in nanostructured squared elements with
that novel technique. The precession frequencies are found to be different
in 90 degree Neel walls than in the closure domains of the squared elements
exhibiting a static four domain Landau pattern. The obtained results will
be discussed and the potential of this new technique will be outlined.
