Spin-polarized unoccupied quantum-well states in ultrathin films of Co on Cu(100) — •Dehong Yu, Markus Donath, Jürgen Braun, and Georgi Rangelov — Institute of Physics, University of Münster, Wilhelm-Klemm Str. 10, 48149 Münster, Germany
Ultrathin fcc Co films on Cu(100) have been investigated by spin-resolved inverse photoemission. For up to 12 monolayers we observed spin-polarized quantum-well states, which converge into the three dimensional sp band for larger thicknesses. The exchange splitting of the quantum-well states and the bulk-like sp band of Co(100) have been determined to 0.16 - 0.27 eV and 0.37 eV, respectively. The energy dependence of the spin-polarized quantum-well states as a function of the Co thickness is well described by the phase accumulation model. The experiment shows that the quantum confinement in ultrathin Co films is important for both fundamentel understanding and technical design of devices with thin Co films involved.
