In this contribution, we present element-specific soft x-ray studies on mass-filtered iron clusters with diameters in the nm range. The clusters were deposited onto a ferromagnetic hcp(0001) cobalt film on W(110) under soft-landing conditions. These Co films are known to exhibit a strong uniaxial in-plane anisotropy. In order to study the magnetic behaviour of the clusters, we used the transverse magneto-optical Kerr-effect (T-MOKE) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD).
Our T-MOKE data revealed that the deposited Fe clusters (12nm) couple ferromagnetically to the the underlying films. This opens up the possibility to saturate the magnetization of the clusters without applying strong external magnetic fields. From photoabsorption spectra taken with circularly polarized radiation (XMCD) we determined an enhanced ratio between orbital and spin moments for Fe clusters between 6 and 12 nm compared to the bulk. Our results are discussed with respect to recent experiments on smaller iron clusters.
