Density functional theory and the screened Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green’s function method are used to study electronic and magnetic properties of nanocontacts. We present results for 3d and 4d atomic contacts. Atomic relaxation in contacts and electrodes is calculated with an ab initio based many body potentials constructed for low-dimensional systems. The effect of relaxation on electronic and magnetic properties is demonstrated. We reveal that 4d atomic contacts can be magnetic Magnetic size effects and magnetic transitions in nanocontacts are discussed. Changes in stress, electronic and magnetic properties of nanocontacts with elongation are shown.
