Landslide, island coarsening and equilibrium shape: STM studies of islands on Pt(111) and Cu(100) — •Julian Ikonomov1, Kirilka Starbova2, and Margret Giesen1 — 1Forschungszentrum Juelich, ISG, 52425 Juelich — 2Central Lab of Photoprocesses, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, 1113 Sofia, Bulgaria
We have studied island decay on Pt(111) and the equilibrium shape of islands between 500K and 700K. From the equilibrium shape we determine absolute values for step and kink energies. From the island decay measurements we obtain the relevant energy barriers. Similar to what has been observed for Cu(111) and Ag(111), we find that rapid island decay (atomic landslide) occurs on Pt(111). Furthermore, the reshaping of vacancy islands after corner-to-corner coalescence has been investigated on Cu(100) for temperatures between 303K and 353K. Several stages of the coalescence process were analyzed: formation of the neck-like bond between the two coalescing islands; subsequent widening of the neck until an oblong shape is formed, and the final relaxation to the equilibrium shape. From the relaxation time we determine the dominant underlying mass transport processes.
