Experimental requirements for β-NMR measurements on surfaces — •O. Kühlert, C. Bromberger, R. Schillinger, H. J. Jänsch, and D. Fick — Philipps Universität, Fachbereich Physik and Zentrum für Materialwissenschaften, D-35032 Marburg, Germany
To enable NMR on single crystal surfaces its sensitivity has to be enhanced at least by 5 orders of magnitude. One approach is the use of highly nuclear spin polarized thermal 8Li-atoms which are adsorbed at the surface. The polarization of the ensemble can be measured by the asymmetry of the β-decay of the adsorbed atoms.
The experimental setup is operated by a home made experimental control and data acquisition system using PC-hardware. Real time performance is achieved by means of RTLinux[1]. To allow an immediate analysis of data it also uses features of the ROOT framework[2]. In addition to β-NMR AES, TPD, and general x-y measurements are supported and can be adapted to special needs.
In the poster we present some experimental results and the experimental setup —particularly the production of the nuclear spin polarized atomic beam— as well as our control and acquisition system.
Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), Bonn.
