Investigations of systems containing actinides are carried out almost exclusively on compounds like actinide oxides. There is a lack of experimental data for the determination of electronic properties in thin film systems of the pure metal. Their behavior can be investigated by means of surface sensitive techniques. However, this unambiguously requires the preparation of clean and ordered systems which is of strong difficulty due to the extreme chemical reactivity of actinide surfaces.
We show that it is possible to prepare uranium thin films as crystalline systems without contaminations. The structural and electronic properties are determined as a function of film thickness by STM measurements. The spectroscopic data allow to distinguish between both elements.
