Low temperature STM investigation of Lander molecules on Cu — •Micol Alemani, Francesca Moresco, Leo Gross, and Karl-Heinz Rieder — Inst. für Exp.physik, FU Berlin, Arnimallee 14, D-14195 Berlin, Germany
A detailed Low-Temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope
investigation of individual C90H98 molecules (Lander)
adsorbed on copper surfaces is presented.
Depending on the
substrate geometry, the molecules show different orientations on the
surface and different internal configurations. Accurate theory-experiment
comparisons allow the extraction of molecular adsorption geometries on
surface terraces and steps.
Thanks to the stability of the system at low temperature, single
Lander molecules were manipulated by means of the interaction
between the molecule and the tip in the
constant-height-mode. The manipulation signal is periodic
and shows regular jumps of the molecule between an adsorption site and the
next. Theoretical calculations of the manipulation curves may allow us to
extract the intramolecular motion of the molecule.
