The organization of large numbers of identical supermolecules in ordered arrays is a key step towards the development of practical molecular devices. Following this general goal, the possibility of the immobilization of a precursor of a molecular rectifier, Ru-based metalorganic complex on noble metal substrates (Au and Ag) has been tested. The monomolecular films were formed by immersion of the substrates in i) a solution of the complexes in ACN and ii) solutions of the complexes and hexanethiol in ACN in different ratios. As was found by a combination of several complementary experimental techniques, the metalorganic complexes adsorb on Au and Ag surfaces only from the pure solution. The addition of hexanethiol leads to the substitution of the metalorganic moieties by the hexanethiol molecules, with the subsequent formation of hexanethiolate monolayer. This finding is additionally confirmed by displacement experiments. Molecular orientation and conformation of the films were determined.
