High Temperature Diffusion of 6Li on Ru(001) — •H. Löser, D. Fick, and H. J. Jänsch — Philipps-Universität Marburg, Fachbereich Physik, Renthof 5, 35032 Marburg
The tracer-diffusion of 6Li was measured at coverages below 2·10−3 ML in a temperature range from 1100 K - 1200 K. The use of hyperpolarised 6Li allows the adaption of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques for diffusion measurements to single crystals and UHV conditions. The approach taken measures the tracer-diffusion directly through the decay of a rf-induced magnetization grid in the nuclear spin polarization.
At the elevated temperatures of the experiment the diffusion process is in competition to thermal desorption. This yields extremly high diffusion constants that can not be explained by nearest neighbor site hopping models. In combination with previous measurements [1,2] of our group it is now possible to identify temperature dependent diffusion processes of the tracer diffusion of Li on Ru(001) from 80 K up to 1200 K .
