NMR chemical shift measurements of 129Xe on single crystal surfaces — •P. Gerhard, M. Koch, D. Fick, and H.J. Jänsch — Philipps–Universität Marburg, FB Physik, D–35032 Marburg
We show for the first time results of NMR chemical shift measurements of hyperpolarized 129Xe on an Ir(111) single crystal surface.
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is one of the most popular and successful methods. In surface science the use of NMR has generally been limited to materials with large surfaces (powders, zeolithes) due to a lack of sensitivity of several orders of magnitude. Experiments on single crystal surfaces have so far only been conducted using 6,7,8Li and unconventional, elaborate methods [1].
129Xe provides a sensitive, inert probe and can easily be hyperpolarized. Monolayer sensitivity could be demonstrated for conventional NMR detection [2]. This enabled us to study single crystal surfaces exploiting the possibilities of surface preparation and manipulation. Beside chemical shift measurements on different surfaces [3], in situ verification of nuclear polarizations up to 0.8 and measurements of Xe films are presented. Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
