Energetically well-defined states, so called quantum well states, which exist in Na monolayers on Cu(111) represent a two dimensional electron gas. These states are probed locally by scanning tunneling microscopy / spectroscopy. Additionally, the injection of electrons or holes induces photon emission. In optical spectra we identify inelastic tunneling processes and interband transitions in agreement with numerical calculations. Moreover, the data reveal two-electron processes which we attribute, based on modelling, to Auger and hot-hole processes.
