Dependency of Light Scattering on the Geometry of Planar Nanoparticles — •Manuel Gonçalves and Othmar Marti — Universität Ulm - Abteilung Experimentelle Physik, Albert-Einstein-Allee 11, D-89069 Ulm
Light scattering by small particles of a size comparable to the light wavelength, have been investigated extensively, mainly to characterize the single particle scattering properties and the resulting collective behavior. However, since the discovery of photonic crystals, several geometries have been proposed in order to obtain photonic band gaps [1] [2], where the geometrical configuration of the particle arrays is of big importance.
The understanding of what happens near the particles of such arrays, is essential to compare with the models describing the behavior of photonic crystals.
We have investigated experimentally the light scattering of planar particles, for materials with different refraction index, in the near- and far-field. The far-field measurements have shown a strong dependency of the scattered light on the shape and the orientation of the particles relative to direction of incidence and polarization of light.
