We present an experimental investigation of Pt atoms and clusters deposited on a graphite surface. Our results obtained with photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrate that both, spectral position and shape of the Pt 4f core levels change strongly as a function of adsorbate position. Strong shifts towards higher binding energies are observed when the adsorbates are allowed to diffuse from a terrace position to step edges, suggestive of strong interactions at defects. We also observe a dependence of the photoelectron spectra on the deposition conditions. We interpret these changes as resulting from different adsorption geometries being realized when depositing clusters with or without a rare gas buffer layer. Based on valence photoelectron spectra we also discuss the relevant energy reference for the assignment of physically meaningful core level binding energies of the clusters.
