First NMR measurement from 129Xe monolayer adsorbed on a single crystal surface — •M. Koch, P. Gerhard, D. Fick, and H.J. Jänsch — Universität Marburg, FB Physik, D-35032 Marburg
In exploring large area materials like powders, catalysts or zeolithes nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) with 129Xe is a very successful and often used method. 129Xe is highly sensitive to it’s local chemical environment and shows a wide range of chemical shifts. Catalysts or powders show very wide resonance lines the origin of which is difficult to determine. Reference data are of high importance.
For the first time we show 129Xe NMR measurements on a single crystal surface. Signals from monolayer 129Xe adsorbed on a Ir(111) single crystal surface precovered with carbon monoxide (CO) or ethylidyne (CH3C) are presented. Strong dependence of the chemical shift from temperature and surface orientation has been observed.
We discuss surface preparation and TPD spectra of 129Xe adsorbed on the different substrates.
