Diamond-like carbon materials are of special interest due to their applications in field emission devices. Various amorphous carbon (ta-C) films were prepared using mass separated ion beam deposition (MSIBD) with different ion energies and different dopants (H,F). The growth process takes place far from thermal equilibrium as well as the subsequent irradiation of the samples with swift heavy ions (i.e. 200MeV 197Au). The extremely high energy loss (30keV/nm) of the swift heavy ions along their trajectories ionizes and heats up the ta-C matrix locally, leading to continuous graphitlike channels with diameters of several nanometers. Electrical and topographical properties will be presented and the applications of such electrical nanostructures will be discussed
