Forgery-proof thin film setups based on Surface Enhanced Absorption (SEA) — •Ralph Domnick — november AG, Gesellschaft für Molekulare Medizin, Ulrich-Schalk-Str. 3, 91056 Erlangen, Germany
A multilayer setup consisting of a distance layer, a specially designed metal cluster layer, and a protective top coating shows on reflecting surfaces pronounced colors due to the so-called surface enhanced absorption effect (SEA). This thin film setup can be deposited directly on substrate (e.g. spare parts or chip card pads). By changing the viewing angle different colors are visible. This optical effect is highly characteristic and depends strongly on depositon parameters, making it suitable for anti-counterfeiting devices. For a long shelf live of the labeling, especially for the machine readability, the thin film materials of the multilayer setup have to be optimized to the substrate and to each other. As coating technology sputter deposition is preferred as it can produce on one hand extremely stable coatings with taylored properties and on the other hand it shows high reproducibility of the film thickness leading to a good accuracy concerning the optical features.
