Many research groups in the world have investigated the stable levitation of a bulk superconductor in the magnetic field of permanent magnets. We studied the levitation of bulk, melt-textured YBCO in the magnetic field produced by an electromagnetic coil.
The experiments were made using a cylindrical coil 130 mm in outer diameter embedded in an iron double yoke. The magnetic field distribution was measured using a three-dimensional movable Hall probe. Measurements of levitation forces and stiffnesses were performed using a custom force measurement facility in the zero-field and field-cooled mode. A computer simulation program based on the finite element method was used to estimate the maximum achievable levitation force and to design the optimal magnetic circuit.
In the experimental setup we used a YBCO disk 50 mm in diameter at 77 K. We achieved a levitation force of 164 N and a stiffness of 10 N/mm in the zero-field-cooled mode for a current density of 5 A/mm2 in the coil.
