Modelling the metal-insulator transition in Eu-rich EuO — •Peter Sinjukow and Wolfgang Nolting — Lehrstuhl Festkörpertheorie, Institut für Physik, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Invalidenstraße 110, 10115 Berlin, Germany
A Hamiltonian for calculating electronic properties of Eu-rich EuO is proposed, which additionally to the conduction band and the localized Eu spins (Kondo-lattice model) describes electronic impurity levels of oxygen vacancies (He-model). Our results on the electrical resistivity in dependence on the vacancy concentration reproduce well the observed orders of magnitude of the spectacular temperature-driven metal-insulator transitions of different experimental samples of Eu-rich EuO. The metal-insulator transition is interpreted in terms of temperature-dependent quasiparticle densities of states.
