Electron transport through short metallic wires — •Peter Schwab1 and Roberto Raimondi21Institut für Physik, Universität Augsburg — 2Dipartimento di Fisica, Universita di Roma 3

We consider non-equilibrium transport in disordered conductors. In particular we calculate the interaction correction to the current for a wire which is connected to reservoirs by resisitive interfaces. For a long wire our theory reproduces the standard Altshuler-Aronov corrections to the conductivity. We analyze in detail the limit of a very short wire where the diffusive motion of the electrons is dominated by a single diffusive mode [1]. In this limit we find a linear conductance which is proportional to lnT over a certain range of temperature. The shape of the current-voltage characteristics does neither depend on the sample geometry nor on the quality of the interface between the wire and the leads. The relevance of our calculation for existing experiments is discussed as well as the connection with alternative theoretical approaches.
