2D or not 2D: dimensional crossover in quantum critical metals — •Markus Garst and Achim Rosch — Institut für Theorie der Kondensierten Materie, Universität Karlsruhe, 76128 Karlsruhe
In a couple of heavy fermion materials the observed critical behaviour can be explained with the help of 2D-spin fluctuations. However, the question arises as to when and how the 3D nature of those materials comes into play. To answer this question we investigate the 2D-3D dimensional crossover in the framework of an RG-analysis. We identify the regions in the phase diagram where the 3D- and 2D-critical behaviour dominate. Furthermore, we show the leading contributions to the specific heat, thermal expansion and the correlation length.
