Fractionalized Fermi liquids — •Matthias Vojta1, T. Senthil2, and Subir Sachdev31Institut für Theorie der Kondensierten Materie, Universität Karlsruhe — 2Department of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, USA — 3Department of Physics, Yale University, New Haven, USA

We discuss unconventional phases of Kondo lattice models describing conduction and local moment electrons in dimensions d≥ 2. In particular, in the limit of weak Kondo coupling magnetic frustration can lead to fractionalized, non-magnetic state (FL) with a Fermi surface of sharp electron-like quasiparticles, enclosing a volume quantized by (nT−1)(mod 2), with nT the total density of electrons per unit cell of the ground state. There are a separate set of fractionalized excitations linked to the deconfined phase of a Z2 gauge theory. Confinement leads to a conventional Fermi liquid state, with a Fermi volume quantized by nT (mod 2), and an intermediate superconducting state. In addition, fractionalized magnetic phases are possible as well, which may be of relevance to a number of heavy fermion compounds.
