Decoherence in matter wave inferometry — •Wolfgang Belzig, Christian Schroll, and Christoph Bruder — Universität Basel, 4056 Basel, Schweiz
We investigate theoretically transport of coherent matter waves through an Aharonov-Bohm geometry created by microfabricated wires. Such structures are currently developed by many experimental groups. We put special emphasis on the intrinsic decoherence mechanism resulting from the current noise of the wires, which produce the atomic wave guides. Using a stochastic approach to the density matrix time evolution we find the conditions under which interference should be observable and make quantitative predictions for the observed interference pattern. We discuss the similarities and differences of atom interferometry to mesoscopic electron transport.
