The impact of the orbital degree of freedom to the physical properties in layered manganite single crystals La1−xSr1+xMnO4 (0≤ x≤ 0.5) was investigated by different experimental techniques, as thermal and electric transport µSR, NMR, and magnetization measurements. As a function of doping, a continuous transition of the orientation of the occupied eg orbital perpendicular to the MnO plane (x=0) to an occupation in the plane (x≈0.5) is observed, leading for x=0.5 to the well established charge-orbital ordering at low temperatures. This transition is further manifested in the magnetic ordering, being at low doping levels (x=0,1/8) of antiferromagnetic, at intermediate doping levels (x=1/4,0.4) spin-glass-like, and for x=0.5 CE-type antiferromagnetic nature.
