Using optical spectroscopy with an emphasis on the range of 6 to 30 cm−1 (0.2 - 1 THz), the competition of superconductivity and magnetism is studied in superlattices composed of alternative YBa2Cu3O7−δ and La0.67 Ca0.33 MnO3 thin layers deposited on LaSrGaO4 (001) substrate. The thickness of YBCO layers used is 40 nm, 30 nm, and 20 nm while that of LCMO layer is kept at 20 nm. Clear evidence for interaction between the charge carriers and the magnetic subsystems is obtained: the metallic properties in the normal state and the condensate density in the superconducting state are drastically suppressed. The mechanism to suppress superconductivity is discussed in terms of gap symmetry distortion as a result of proximity effects.
