Complete angular anisotropy of Hc2 in YNi2B2C and HoNi2B2C — •Stuart Wimbush, Ludwig Schultz, and Bernhard Holzapfel — IFW Dresden, P O Box 270016, 01171 Dresden.
The borocarbide series of materials exhibits strongly anisotropic superconducting characteristics (upper critical field, critical current). Until now, however, the complete angular dependencies of the anisotropies have been lacking, reported only in the principal crystallographic directions. Results are presented here of such measurements made on epitaxial thin films of the representative borocarbide compounds YNi2B2C (non-magnetic) and HoNi2B2C (magnetic). An attempt is made to reconcile the results with the current understanding of such behaviour, in particular the recent suggestion that the borocarbides may exhibit a symmetry of the order parameter possessing point nodes.
