ReWritable Data Storage on DVD using Phase Change Technology — •Hans Ebinger — SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES AG, Hanauer Landstrasse 103, 63796 Kahl am Main
In the coming years the VHS casette will be replaced by rewritable Digital Video Discs (DVD). Consumers will appreciate wear free data storage, random access and brilliant video and sound quality. The DVD will also for the first time provide a bridge between the HIFI and TV consumer electronic world and the PC / Internet. The disc media are mass manufactured in replication lines, which include injection moulding, multilayer sputter deposition and radical UV curing techniques. As the manufacturing process for the rewritable discs is quite complex and delicate, the suppliers of the replication lines such as SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES are requested to provide the required process technology along with the equipment. In the presentation the current DVD formats, the disc manufacturing steps and the multilayer thin film system will be explained.
