Towards Laser Spectroscopy of the 2s State Hyperfine Splitting in Lithium-like 209Bi80+ — •Rodolfo Sánchez1, Andreas Dax2, Guido Ewald1, Siegbert Hagmann1, H.-Jürgen Kluge1, Christophor Kozhuharov1, Thomas Kühl1, Wilfried Nörtershäuser1,3, Thomas Stöhlker1, and Marco Tomaselli1,41GSI Darmstadt, Germany — 2PSI, Villigen, Switzerland — 3Universität Tübingen, Germany — 4Technische Universität, Darmstadt, Germany

Measurements of the ground-state hyperfine splitting (hfs) in hydrogenlike heavy ions can be used to test QED in extremly strong electric and magnetic fields. Previously, laser spectroscopy has been performed at the experimental storage ring (ESR) at GSI for hydrogenlike 209Bi82+ and 207Pb81+ [1]. However, the theoretical interpretation of those results is hampered by the fact that the contribution of nuclear magnetization (Bohr-Weisskopf effect) is of similar size as the QED contribution. Recently, theoretical calculations of Shabaev [2] have shown that the QED effect can be probed on the level of a few percent in a specific difference between the hfs of the 1s state of hydrogenlike bismuth and the 2s state of lithiumlike bismuth. Thus, a beamtime for the hfs measurement of 209Bi80+ is currently under preparation at GSI. In order to increase the efficiency of fluorescence detection, we are testing the possibility of using avalanche photodiodes for single-photon counting.
