Novel Source for Atomic Beams of Metastable Gases: Design and Performance — •Martin Dürr, Maarten DeKieviet, Sascha Epp, and Frank Lang — Physikalisches Institut,Universität Heidelberg,Philosophenweg 12,D-69120 Heidelberg
Across many scientific communities there is an increasing interest in high flux sources of metastable species(e.g. lithography, BEC). We present a novel and simple design, based on micro structured electrodes, for producing truly thermal metastable beams. ToF data prove that the expansion is supersonic with speed ratios up to 8.5 and an internal temperature of less than 10 K. We show that this source works equally for many different gases (He ,Ne ,Kr ,Ar ,H2 ,N2 ,O2 , etc). In addition, the source can be cooled easily to cryogenic temperatures. The further prospect is to produce a LN2 cooled atomic beam of spin polarized groundstate 3He.
