Focussing currently available short-pulse high-power lasers
down to diffraction limited spot sizes results in
intensities between 1018W/cm2 and 1021W/cm2.
A problem is the accurate determination of the intensity,
typically derived from independent measurements of focal spot
size, pulse energy and pulse duration. Not all of these
parameters can be obtained at full power, leading to large
variations on the quoted intensity of otherwise comparable
systems. For this and other reasons a direct measurement of
the intensity, using a widely accepted standard procedure,
is highly desirable. We are investigating a method based on
the ionization dynamics of single atoms, where the highest
produced charge state gives a measure of the maximum field
strength in the focus and, hence, the intensity up to today’s
highest values.
We will discuss various aspect of the calibration procedure of
this method, including the theoretical description of
the ionization process and the technical aspects of developing
a standardized "atomic intensity probeNo-dq.
