The planar wave string/Super Yang-Mills duality — •Jan Plefka — Max-Planck-Institut für Gravitationsphysik, Am Mühlenberg 1, 14476 Golm
Recently it was noticed by Berenstein, Maldacena and Nastase that type IIB string theory in a planar wave background has a dual description in terms of a certain novel limit of maximally supersymmetric U(N) gauge theory. Excitingly this duality operates on the perturbative level on both the string and Yang-Mills side and allows to directly relate states in the string Hilbert space to adequately defined operators in the Super Yang-Mills theory. The string spectrum is recovered from the scaling dimensions of these operators. String interactions correspond to the non-planar sector of the gauge theoretic perturbation expansion, much in the way envisaged by ’t Hooft in 1974. However, the necessary large N limit of the gauge theory is not the standard ’t Hooftian limit, but rather a novel double scaling limit for which diagrams of all genera survive.
