An evolutionary target analysis applied to the multichannel energy flow in LH2 — •Wendel Wohlleben1, Tiago Buckup1, Jennifer L. Herek2, Richard J. Cogdell3, and Marcus Motzkus11MPI für Quantenoptik, D-85748 Garching — 2AMOLF, Amsterdam, NL — 3IBLS, University of Glasgow, UK

Multichannel energy flow networks give rise to both temporally and spectrally overlapping signals from numerous decay states. Here we devellop an evolutionary target analysis that retrieves the spectral profiles and interconversion rates of target states according to a rate equation model. The algorithm offers flexible testing of kinetic network models with low a priori knowledge requirements. It applies universally to inversion of any time-resolved spectra. Starting from transient absorption spectra of LH2 from Rps. acidophila, our best fit model reproduces correctly the well-known cooling and decay behavior in the S1 band, but necessitates an additional, clearly distinct singlet state S* that does not exchange with S1, promotes ultrafast triplet population and participates in photosynthetic energy transfer.
