Femtosecond Spectroscopy of DMABN in the Solid State — •Peter Gilch, Christopher Root, Helmut Satzger, Markus Braun, and Wolfgang Zinth — Sektion Physik, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Oettingenstr. 67, D-80538 München, Germany
Upon photo-excitation many molecular system are known to undergo large and ultrafast structural changes in solution. In solid state these changes are often suppressed due to steric constraints exerted by the lattice. A prominent example for large conformational changes after photo-excitation is the photoreaction of 4-dimethylaminobenzonitrile (DMABN) in polar solvents. In DMABN a partial charge transfer from the amino- to the cyano-group induced by photoexcitation is accompanied by structural changes of these groups. We compared the photo-dynamics of DMABN in solution and in solid state by femtosecond spectroscopy. These measurements seem to indicate that the conformational changes also occur in solid state but that these changes relax much faster than in solution.
