Optimization of high harmonic brightness and pulse duration — •Milutin Kovacev — CEA/SPAM, bat. 522, Centre d’Etudes de Saclay, 91191 Gif-sur-Yvette Cedex, France
We will report on the characterization and optimization of the properties of this unique source in the XUV spectral domain. In particular, the brightness, the coherence and the ultra short pulse duration make this source interesting for a growing number of applications. The brightness of this source is optimized by producing high order harmonics at high pumping energy and long focal length lens. An absorption-limited emission is demonstrated in xenon, argon and up to the 47th harmonic in neon. This corresponds to high conversion efficiencies and an increase of at least one order of magnitude of the harmonic energies compared to previously reported values. For the 15th harmonic generated in xenon, we report for the first time energies in excess of 1 µJ. Concerning the ultra short pulse duration we investigate the possibility of confining the harmonic emission to a short temporal window through polarization gating. By combining two time delayed left and right circularly polarized pulses, we were able to control the duration of the linearly polarized temporal gate. The observed broadening of the harmonic spectra can be attributed to a shortening by a factor 2 of the harmonic emission.
