XFROG Measurements of Supercontinua generated in Tapered Fibers — •Diana Türke, Jörn Teipel, Dominic Meiser, and Harald Giessen — Institut für Angewandte Physik, Universitẗ Bonn, Wegelerstr. 8, 53115 Bonn

In order to understand the mechanism responsible for the generation of a white light continuum in tapered fibers, a FROG setup has been implemented. A crosscorrelation setup using part of the incoming femtosecond beam as the reference signal allows spectrally and temporally resolved measurements with unambiguous results of even weak signals.

Intensity dependent spectrograms have been taken and compared to theoretical simulations of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation including Kerr-type nonlinearities. The results indicate that self-phase modulation and splitting into solitons have a major influence on the generation process as it has previously been suggested for photonic crystal fibers. Additionally, XFROG traces taken of the continua generated in fibers with different waist diameters and waist lenghts draw upon the theorie that only for spectral components higher than the zero group velocity dispersion point the soliton splitting occours. For the smaller components the spectrographs show non-solitonic radiation.
