The manipulation of cold neutral atoms on atom chips has attracted growing
interest in the last year. So far experiments have exploited the
interaction of atoms with magnetic potentials created by current carrying
microstructures on the chip. In order to develop atom chips towards a
universal tool for quantum information processing, other interactions have
to be integrated, for instance atom-light interaction.
Our work focuses on the implementation of micro-optics on the chip, and
thereby detecting atoms. We investigated the feasibility of state selective
single atom detection using integrated microcavities.
Here we present our theoretical models which suggest that high fidelity
single atom detection is feasibel using existing technologies. We are
currently implementing a test experiment. We describe our setup, details of
the fabrication of an atom chip containing a fibre cavity and preliminary
experiments. Finally we discuss ideas for further steps towards a full
integration of on-chip light optics.

and the EU(ACQUIRE collaboration).
