We discuss the estimation of characteristic parameters that define a quantum device. In particular, we study estimation schemes for quantum channels under the constraint that only a finite amount of qubits is available. It turns out that maximally entangled qubits can serve as a nonclassical resource for the estimation of a Pauli channel. We then generalize our model in such a way that all qubits involved are realistically influenced by noise. The estimation step of these schemes can be performed using several techniques. We demonstrate the benefits and disadvantages of each technique.
