Coherent exchange of quantum information between light and atomic ensembles — •Jonas Ries, Björn Brezger, and Alexander I. Lvovsky — Fachbereich Physik, M696, Universität Konstanz, D-78457 Konstanz, Germany
Plenty of present research is dedicated to quantum information processing, using either atoms or photons. To combine the advantages of both approaches, it is desirable to develop an interface that would allow coherent, completely reversible transfer of quantum information between these two media. We present an experimental project dedicated to developing such an interface. In particular, we study polarization self-rotation in atomic alkali vapor and its application to squeezing of optical vacuum states. Our future efforts include the implementation of storage of non-classical optical states in atomic ensembles and conditional preparation of non-classical atomic states.
