Transport of Atoms in Optical Lattices — •Wolfgang Merkel, Matthias Freyberger, Holger Mack, Wolfgang P. Schleich, and Victor V. Kozlov — Abteilung für Quantenphysik, Universiät Ulm, 89069 Ulm
Based on the STIRAP (stimulated Raman adiabatic passage) approach, we investigate the light induced transport of an atom in an optical lattice from a potential well to an adjacent one. Provided the laser pulses used for the transfer are sufficiently narrowband we demonstrate that for pulses in the counterintuitive sequence the efficiency of the transfer can approach 100% and the process is not affected by spontaneous emission. We develop an idealized analytical model in a three-level approximation and also perform a full-scale numerical analysis which accounts for the actual vibrational structure of the optical lattice. Our results show how the transfer efficiency depends on parameters of the pulses and the optical lattice.
