Signature of One-Dimensionality in Oscillation Dynamics of Bose-Einstein Condensates — •M. Kottke, D. Hellweg, T. Schulte, S. Drenkelforth, L. Cacciapuoti, J. Arlt, and W. Ertmer — Universität Hannover, Welfengarten 1, 30167 Hannover

The possibility to transfer Bose-Einstein condensates into a one-dimensional (1D) or even more strongly confining regime has raised considerable interest. Among the signatures of the transition to such a regime are the appearance of low-energy excitations of the condensate phase [1] and the change in release energy [2]. Recently, the oscillation properties have been predicted to change in the regime between 3D and 1D condensates [3]. We present measurements of the frequency of the low m=0 quadrupole oscillation mode in highly elongated, purely magnetic traps with extreme aspect ratio (1:100). However, this frequency is also influenced by temperature and oscillation amplitude of the condensate. By choosing appropriate experimental conditions where these effects are suppressed, we can observe the crossover regime between 3D and 1D. We compare our results with theory [3] and present the observed signature of one-dimensionality.
