Magnetic field measurement based on Electromagnetically Induced Transparency — •Arno Huss, Roland Lammegger, and Laurentius Windholz — Institut für Experimentalphysik, Technische Universität Graz, Petersgasse 16, 8010 Graz

The destructive quantum interference of resonantly excited transitions within a lambda-system in case of two photon resonance leads to a medium, which is coherently prepared in a superpositional dark state. The corresponding distinct enhancement of radiation transmission is well known as Electromagnetically Induced Transparency. Due to the quantum interference nature of this effect very narrow linewidths downto 1 Hz can be observed. Consequently, if a lambda system is constructed within the Zeeman sublevel manifold of a hyperfine state, the transmission is very sensitive to magnetic field deviations. We present first results of sub-kHz resonances, observed in a Hanle configuration by single laser frequency excitation on the Rb87 D1 line. The aim of our work is to build a portable magnetometer with high accuracy and high spatial resolution, which works at room temperature. It can be used in human health care and in the monitoring and standardisation of working conditions.
