Development and performance of a laser driven cesium magnetometer with fT sensitivity — •Stephan Gröger, Robert Wynands, and Antoine Weis — Université de Fribourg, Physics Department, Chemin de Musée 3, 1700 Fribourg, Switzerland
For a planned experiment at Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) searching for a possible electric dipole moment (edm) of the neutron it is essential to measure and stabilize the applied magnetic field and its homogeneity with high accuracy. In this context we have developed a laser driven optically pumped magnetometer (OPM) which is based on cesium contained in a paraffin-coated glass cell of 7cm diameter. The OPM is designed for measuring a magnetic field of 2 µT with the highest possible sensitivity. It is operated in the so-called Mx configuration and measures the corresponding Larmor frequency of about 7 kHz while optical pumping is performed on a hyperfine component of the D1 line. The intrinsic linewidth of the magnetometer signal was measured to be 3.5 Hz. The light is produced by an extended cavity diode laser whose output frequency is stabilized to the Doppler-broadened transition in a reference cell.
The magnetometer can be operated either in the self-oscillating mode or in the phase-locked mode and shows an intrinsic sensitivity of 60 fT/√Hz. Details on the design of the OPM and its performance inside the shield of the edm experiment will be presented.
