Sympathetic crystallization of ions in a linear Paul trap — •Claus Lämmerzahl, Ertan Göklü, and Stephan Schiller — Institut f. Experimentalphysik, Heinrich–Heine-Universität Düsseldorf
The results of numerical simulations of sympathetic crystallization of heavy as well as light molecules in a Paul trap are presented. For the sympathetic cooling of heavy ions, the actively cooled particles are singly ionized Barium ions while the charge and the mass of the sympathetically cooled species considered was chosen up to 60 e and 150 times the mass of Ba. For the chosen trap parameters we find that sympathetic cooling is possible when the charge is sufficiently high. In the case of sympathetic cooling of light ions we choose actively cooled Beryllium ions. In this case the sympathetically cooled light singly ionized ions may be as light as three atomic mass units.
